A gas mask - for a dog. ☣️🐶 Made in Germany during the First World War, this respirator was designed for a messenger or guard dog. It’s built from 'ersatz' materials - a coarsely woven paper and fabric blend - with large, metal-rimmed eyepieces and strips of rabbit fur lining the head and neck. Collected by members of the 41st Battalion, AIF near Bray on 25 August 1918, it’s now on display in the Australian War Memorial’s First World War galleries.
