In case you missed it, the wonderful folks at SONOR uploaded a short lesson with me on their YouTube channel! This lesson can really open some doors in your coordination and independence practice. This is just a short version, so if you want the full lesson, head over to YouTube and check it out! It’s such a privilege to share my passion with my son, who means the world to me. It’s about more than just playing music; learning anything deeply confronts you with your limitations, tests you, and challenges your belief in your potential. Every task you complete that once seemed impossible adds to a collection of successes. These successes serve as reminders that when faced with new challenges, we’ve overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles before. This is the lesson and hopeful message we

Wow! One of my favorite endings to any song ever written. From one of the most extraordinary musical experiences of my life. I still have to pinch myself when I think about standing on that stage, feeling the sheer power of this legendary big band night after night. The sound, the energy, the history in every note. To be invited for the second year in a row by Cathy Rich herself—an honor beyond measure. To play some of the greatest big band arrangements ever written—something my teenage self cou

Even when I’m practicing on a pad, people are sometimes surprised when I tell them that at the end of a practice session — after working through all the necessary things — I take a moment to improvise and just play. Like I recommend in my book, I think a musician, especially a percussionist, should be able to make music — or at least something that vaguely represents it — with anything. Anything. It can actually help spark creative ideas that aren’t tied to the usual sounds we get from our instr

this has meant to me over the past two decades. It’s been my secret weapon—keeping me on track, keeping me honest. The beauty of it? It’s effortless. The format takes out the guesswork, but somehow, it still reveals truths that have challenged me, pushed me, and made me grow. What I’ve relied on for years, you can now have in your hands—more refined, more streamlined. A tool that nudges you toward good habits and consistency without you even realizing it. I wouldn’t want to do without it. At lea

🎉Without a doubt, these are my new favorite hi-hats!!! 🎉 the Next Member of the Family Introducing the 14“ Quicksand Hats. - Higher in register - Incredibly articulate and clear - Super responsive, razor-sharp, but never harsh 70s/80s studio sound You’ve probably already heard them. I’ve been playing these incognito for the past few months—undercover prototypes. You can hear them in the Brass Band videos I released with Sonor or even in a couple of my recent Instagram posts. Now, I’m beyond ex

Don’t get me wrong—what we play and practice ultimately has to sound and feel good 🎶. I’m not a fan of overemphasizing concepts or systems to the point where they overshadow the end result: music. But sometimes, a simple conceptual experiment can surprise you with a pleasant listening experience 🎧. If it passes that test, why not run with it? In this case, alternating strokes between the ride cymbal 🥁 and snare creates interesting rhythms with a nice flow. What do you think? Do you have any s

i won’t hold back on this one. I’m completely, unapologetically in love with this cymbal! Close your eyes. Just listen. For a long time, I experimented with how to achieve a higher register sound , more controlled. Perfectly recordable. Something that echoes the tones of the 70s and 80s but fits seamlessly into today’s music. What surprised me most was its appearance. 😃I didn’t expect it to look like this, but here we are. The truth is, this isn’t something entirely new—jazz and studio drummers

Here’s some rehearsal footage from one of my favorite projects ever—a duo with the legend and monster musician that is @garyhusband1 I have to admit, it was a little intimidating to be in the room with someone I respect so much as a musician, composer, improviser, pianist, AND drummer. But the sheer productivity, creative flow, and, most of all, Gary just being an absolute gentleman made it an inspiring and truly enjoyable experience. If you haven’t checked it out yet, go to Spotify or wherever

The years that followed—touring the world with this group—were filled with learning, inspiration, and pure joy. Forever grateful for this journey! Check out our studio and live album that we recorded together, as well as numerous YouTube videos you’ll find. have you ever seen us live? Have a great day! @sono

This drum camp was truly unforgettable, and a big part of that was thanks to the incredible @peter.weniger His presence brought so much inspiration, as he delivered one of the most insightful and impactful talks on improvisation I’ve ever experienced. He broke down the principles and mindset with such clarity, played alongside the participants, and demonstrated his points with absolute mastery. The focus was on improvisation and soloing, and it was amazing to see drummers of all levels and style

found this in a journal of mine from a couple years back 😀 does this seem familiar to you? (I apologize if this sounds like I’m tooting my own horn but stay with me) it reminds me again what a looong process writing the EPM book was for me..as were my albums and other educational products. very often, it’s just a matter of starting one more time, picking it up once again. Again and again, and when you feel like “I can’t do this any longer” to simply start again. I want to ask you: what is somet

New Year’s Eve has always been a special one for me. A moment to reflect on what has been, what needs to change, and what we hope can stay the same. Most of all, it’s a chance to look at the habits we can practice—daily, patiently—to move a little closer to turning intentions into reality. For me today, that also means spending some quiet time in the studio, refining sounds and experimenting with new options. Whatever you’re doing, I truly hope the year ahead will be a great one for you. Wishing

Soon heading off to the next drum camp — this time with the legendary Peter Erskine. While preparing and packing, I can’t help but think of all the amazing guests we’ve had so far. So grateful for this job… to spend time with my heroes — and share those experiences with drummers who are just as excited about it as I am. In case you haven’t seen it yet: Check out the full version of the improvisation I did with Steve Smith on my YouTube channel. (Just search my name — you’ll find it.) 👉 And by t

Was great to be back at the @jazzclubatrane again with @peter.weniger and this group of fine musicians. Reflecting on this little clip I captured with my phone. It’s really one of my favorite things—what we could maybe call micro-improvisations. Not the big solo freedom, but those tiny adjustments and embellishments to notes—little answers to what the melody player might put out as a phrase. Adjusting to where the group is going dynamically—none of this can be planned in this depth and sensitivi
